Why Special Education?

There are many reasons to why I have made the decision to go into the Education setting, specifically Special Education. I have always had a passion in working with students because of how kind, creative, and funny they can be. They have a way of seeing the world that as adults we don't see any more. They are able to take the simplest things and make them fun and interesting; and the joy on their faces is so heartwarming to see. When they are passionate to learn something new and amazing it makes me want to add onto their learning to help them grow into great and amazing people. They are kind, compassionate, and helpful to others that I want to foster that and instill in them that, that is the type of person they should want to become as they get older; someone who is willing to learn, grow and help others. They are our future, so if we want a better future for ourselves and them, then we need to start teaching them positively at a young age.

When I was applying to Western's Woodring College of Education I was originally going to only apply for Elementary Education. But when I was applying I met the department head for Special Education. It was then that he told me all about what Special Education covered and from that conversation I found what I was meant to do. So I applied for the dual endorsement of Special Education and Elementary Education program. This was one of the best decisions I have made in my career thus far because I have found an area of education that I feel most passionate about. One of the biggest things that I want to do as an educator is inspire all children but especially those who struggle. I have experienced the struggle and hard work it takes to be able to keep up with my peers in some ways more than others. But because of the teachers I've had and my family I have learned determination and resilience; and that is something that I want to teach my students. I want them to know that even though it's hard right now, if they keep working at it and pushing forward then they too will be able to do what their classmates can, even if it takes them more time that is okay because they can do it. I want all children to be able to reach their own goals and dreams regardless of what society says that they can and cannot do weather or not they have a disability.
